Booking ski rental online: why it pays off in Saalbach Hinterglemm
Published on 6 min read
Up to 20% cheaper, no Saturday queue, and your size is actually there. What booking online really gets you — and when it does not matter.
The price difference is the smallest advantage
Book your gear online instead of walking in and you pay up to 20% less than the day rate. That is the reason most people know — and the least important one.
The other three you only notice once you are here.
1. Saturday afternoon
Saturday is changeover day in the Glemm valley. Between roughly 3pm and 6pm every rental shop in the village has the same queue, because everyone arrives at once and everyone wants skis at once.
If you have pre-booked, you are not in that queue — your set is already made up. What is left is the boot fitting and the binding setting.
If you have any flexibility: come Friday evening or early Saturday. It is the quietest window of the entire week.
2. Your size is genuinely available
In peak weeks — Christmas, the February half-terms, Easter — individual sizes and categories really do sell out. The tightest are:
- children's gear in the smaller sizes
- women's boots between 24.5 and 25.5 Mondopoint
- Platinum skis in the popular lengths
Booking online reserves your category and size. Without it, you take what is left.
3. You decide sitting down, not standing up
Nobody makes a good decision about ski categories in a shop with three families waiting behind them. Online you have time to read the differences:
- Economy — forgiving all-rounders. Easy to turn, calm underfoot, undemanding. For beginners, returning skiers and two to three hours a day.
- Premium — performance carvers with more edge grip and stability. For confident skiers out all day.
- Platinum — this season's top models: race carvers, all-mountain, freeride. For strong skiers and anything off-piste.
What booking online does *not* replace
The boot fitting. Ski boots are sized in Mondopoint — foot length in centimetres — and for most people that does not match their street shoe size. We measure everyone in the shop, whatever the booking says.
Allow around 15 minutes per person, 30 to 45 for a family. That is time you do not save, and should not want to.
No deposit, free cancellation
An objection we hear a lot: "What if we end up not coming?"
We take no deposit. You pay in the shop when you collect. If the trip falls through, the booking effectively cancels itself — you simply do not turn up, and nothing is charged.
How it works in practice
- Choose dates and category. If in doubt, go one step up. The gap between Economy and Premium costs less than the difference you feel in your legs on day three.
- Book everyone in one transaction. We then prepare the gear as a single group.
- Collect the evening before, or early. Then your first ski morning goes straight to the lift.
- Swap if you need to. If the ski does not suit the conditions or the boot pinches, come back. Swaps are free for the whole rental.
And if you prefer to be spontaneous?
Then just walk in. Outside the peak weeks it is entirely straightforward and you get exactly the same advice. You pay the standard day rate — and on a Saturday you may wait a little longer.
